Overview

The Clinical Informatics Director is a senior leadership position responsible for providing executive-level oversight and strategic direction for clinical informatics operations supporting the VA's Electronic Health Record Modernization (EHRM) initiative. This role serves as a key liaison between clinical operations, IT services, and executive leadership, ensuring alignment of informatics strategies with organizational goals across the VA healthcare system.

Responsibilities

Executive Leadership & Strategic Direction

  • Provide executive-level leadership for clinical informatics programs supporting VHA operations
  • Develop and execute strategic vision for informatics services across 170+ VA Medical Centers
  • Ensure alignment of informatics initiatives with VA's EHRM objectives and organizational priorities
  • Serve as primary point of contact for executive stakeholder engagement
  • Drive organizational transformation through data-driven clinical decision support

Program Oversight & Management

  • Oversee comprehensive clinical informatics service delivery across multiple workstreams
  • Manage relationships with government leadership, clinical executives, and technical teams
  • Ensure programmatic resources are effectively allocated across all areas of expertise
  • Monitor and report on program performance, outcomes, and value delivery
  • Maintain accountability for contract deliverables and service level agreements

Clinical Integration & Optimization

  • Lead efforts to optimize clinical workflows using both Oracle Health (Millennium/Cerner) and VistA/CPRS platforms
  • Drive clinical practice modernization through evidence-based informatics solutions
  • Ensure clinical informatics strategies support High Reliability Organization (HRO) principles
  • Support development of Learning Healthcare System (LHS) capabilities
  • Facilitate integration of clinical decision support tools into provider workflows

SAFe® Agile Leadership

  • Champion SAFe® Lean-Agile principles and practices across the organization
  • Oversee quarterly Program Increment (PI) planning and execution
  • Ensure continuous value delivery through 20 iterations annually
  • Foster culture of innovation, continuous improvement, and operational excellence
  • Support high-performing Agile Release Trains (ARTs) and teams

Stakeholder Management & Communication

  • Maintain regular communication with VHA leadership, OHI executives, and clinical champions
  • Facilitate collaboration between clinical, technical, and administrative stakeholders
  • Present strategic updates and performance metrics to executive leadership
  • Coordinate with VA Medical Center leadership across the enterprise
  • Build and maintain trust-based relationships with key decision-makers

Quality, Risk & Compliance

  • Ensure all informatics solutions meet industry standards and regulatory requirements
  • Identify and mitigate enterprise-level risks to clinical informatics programs
  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and quality metrics
  • Ensure compliance with VA policies, federal regulations, and security requirements
  • Drive continuous quality improvement initiatives

Qualifications

  • Master's Degreed in Healthcare Administration, Nursing Informatics, Health Informatics, Clinical Informatics, or related field
  • Clinical degree highly preferred (MD, DO, RN, PharmD, or equivalent clinical credential)
  • Alternative: Bachelor's degree with additional 5 years of relevant experience (20 years total)
  • Active clinical license preferred (if applicable to background)
  • Board Certification in Clinical Informatics strongly preferred
  • SAFe® certification (SPC, SA, or equivalent) highly desirable
  • Minimum 15 years of progressive healthcare and informatics experience (or 20 years with Bachelor's degree)
  • Minimum 5 years in executive or senior director-level leadership roles
  • Proven track record leading large-scale clinical informatics programs in complex healthcare organizations
  • Extensive experience with Electronic Health Record implementations and optimization
  • Demonstrated success managing multi-million dollar programs and portfolios
  • Deep understanding of clinical workflows, processes, and care delivery models
  • Expert knowledge of EHR systems, particularly Oracle Health (Millennium/Cerner) and/or VistA/CPRS
  • Strong grasp of healthcare data analytics, clinical decision support, and population health management
  • Comprehensive knowledge of healthcare interoperability standards (HL7, FHIR, etc.)
  • Understanding of federal healthcare systems, particularly VA operations (preferred)
  • Required: Deep knowledge and demonstrated application of SAFe® Lean-Agile principles at scale
  • Experience leading Agile transformations in healthcare organizations
  • Proven ability to drive value through empowered, high-performing Agile teams
  • Strong understanding of continuous delivery, DevOps, and modern software development practices
