Overview

CVP is seeking an experienced Histotechnologist to join our team providing comprehensive laboratory services to our Nation's Veterans at the White River Junction VA Medical Center in White River Junction, VT. This is a full-time, on-site position specializing in histopathology laboratory services including tissue processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining procedures.

 

Pay: $39/hr 

Responsibilities

Histological Operations:

  • Gross tissue specimens, accession into computer system, and process using appropriate fixation, dehydration, and clearing techniques
  • Embed tissue specimens in paraffin blocks, cut sections using rotary microtomes (3-5 microns), and mount on glass slides
  • Perform routine H&E staining, execute special stains per pathologist requests, and coverslip slides for microscopic examination
  • Assist pathologists with frozen section procedures, prepare and cut frozen sections using cryostat equipment

Autopsy Support:

  • Serve as backup morgue assistant providing basic assistance during autopsy procedures including body identification, setup, examination support, closure, and cleanup

Quality Assurance and Equipment:

  • Maintain specimen integrity, control processing conditions for optimal tissue preservation and staining quality
  • Operate and maintain histological processing equipment, perform routine maintenance and calibration, troubleshoot issues
  • Participate in quality control programs, document procedures, and follow established protocols for specimen handling

Patient Safety and Administrative:

  • Positively identify specimens, safeguard patient information, follow safety protocols and infection control measures
  • Participate in monthly Laboratory Quality Improvement and Staff meetings (24 hours annually total)
  • Complete mandatory VA training and maintain continuing education requirements

Qualifications

Education and Certification:

  • Bachelor's degree in health sciences/allied sciences appropriate to histopathology OR Bachelor's with 30+ semester hours of biology/chemistry OR 2 years graduate education in related field
  • Current Histotechnologist (HTL) certification from ASCP Board of Certification
  • US Citizenship for Public Trust government security clearance

Experience and Skills:

  • Minimum 3 years recent histology and cytology experience including fixation, embedding, microtomy, processing, and staining
  • Proficiency in tissue processing techniques, histological stains, microtomy, and laboratory information systems
  • Excellent manual dexterity, attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to work independently
  • Physical ability to stand for extended periods and work with precision instruments

 

Primary Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM

  • Available for overtime and federal holidays as needed
